Petite biographie du groupe {par Wikipédia}:

Epica, groupe de metal-symphonique néerlandais fondé en 2002, est issu du départ de Mark Jansen de son groupe After Forever. Il y tenait la place de guitariste. Initialement nommé Sahara Dust, le projet du guitariste aura d'abord pour frontwoman Helena Michaelsen, du groupe Trail of Tears. Au début de l'année 2003, elle sera remplacée par Simone Simons, petite amie de Mark Jansen à l'époque. Ils sont ensuite rejoints par les autres membres du groupe. Le nom définitif du groupe, Epica, sera choisi en fonction de l'album de Kamelot portant le même nom.
Leur premier album, The Phantom Agony sort en Juin 2003 et est produit par Sacha Paeth (producteur de Kamelot notamment), il est dit engagé contrairement à leur second album Consign to Oblivion qui a pour thème la civilisation maya.
